چکیده

Article history: Received 5 December 2017 Received in revised form 22 January 2018 Accepted 23 January 2018 Available online xxxx Structural relaxation during isothermal annealing, quantified by enthalpy recovery of Zr44Ti11Cu10Ni10Be25 towards its metastable equilibrium and correlation to embrittlement, quantified through fracture toughness, KQ, is studied. Enthalpy relaxation over time obeys the Kohlrausch-William-Watts (KWW) stretch exponent with β = 0.74 and τ = 11,000 s. Such β and τ are used to fit experimental KQ(t) with KWW, resulting in R = 0.79. This finding combined with a controlled characterization of the glasses'KQ versus temperature, fictive temperature, and their combination, revealed that embrittlement inmetallic glasses is predominantly controlled by structural rearrangements, whereas volume changes from thermal expansion have negligible influence. © 2018 Acta Materialia Inc. Understanding of the Structural Relaxation of Metallic Glasses within the Framework of the Interstitialcy Theory

A review of the new approach to the understanding of the structural relaxation of metallic glasses based on the Interstitialcy theory has been presented. The key hypothesis of this theory proposed by Granato consists of the statement that the thermodynamic properties of crystalline, liquid and glassy states are closely related to the interstitial defects in the dumbbell (split) configuration, c...

On the correlation between microscopic structural heterogeneity and embrittlement behavior in metallic glasses

In order to establish a relationship between microstructure and mechanical properties, we systematically annealed a Zr-based bulk metallic glass (BMG) at 100 ~ 300 °C and measured their mechanical and thermal properties. The as-cast BMG exhibits some ductility, while the increase of annealing temperature and time leads to the transition to a brittle behavior that can reach nearly-zero fracture ...

Origin of embrittlement in metallic glasses.

Owing to their glassy nature, metallic glasses demonstrate a toughness that is extremely sensitive to the frozen-in configurational state. This sensitivity gives rise to "annealing embrittlement," which is often severe and in many respects limits the technological advancement of these materials. Here, equilibrium configurations (i.e., "inherent states") of a metallic glass are established aroun...

Atomic Dynamics in Metallic Liquids and Glasses

How atoms move in metallic glasses and liquids is an important question in discussing atomic transport, glass formation, structural relaxation and other properties of metallic glasses. While the concept of free-volume has long been used in describing atomic transport, computer simulations and isotope measurements have shown that atomic transport occurs by a much more collective process than ass...

Unusual fast secondary relaxation in metallic glass

The relaxation spectrum of glassy solids has long been used to probe their dynamic structural features and the fundamental deformation mechanisms. Structurally complicated glasses, such as molecular glasses, often exhibit multiple relaxation processes. By comparison, metallic glasses have a simple atomic structure with dense atomic packing, and their relaxation spectra were commonly found to be...
